SIVAL
A European initiative focused on developing advanced simulation, measurement, and Radar Cross Section (RCS) evaluation methods for complex military platforms. Its primary mission is to strengthen the European Union's defense capabilities by standardizing and optimizing defense system design processes in the electromagnetic domain.
About the Project
Developing complex military platforms in Europe involves extensive collaboration among military and civilian entities, including government bodies, research establishments, and industrial partners. In this landscape, electromagnetic simulation has become a fundamental tool, particularly during the early stages of platform development, such as naval topside design.
Modern design processes are inherently iterative; modifications or evolving requirements often necessitate repeated electromagnetic simulations shared among partners. This creates a critical need for accurate and efficient electromagnetic computation methods. Furthermore, stakeholders face new challenges, including the heterogeneity of models for platforms, antennas, and sensors, the vital need to preserve intellectual property regarding sensor data, and the increasing integration of composite materials, metasurfaces, and metamaterials.
Key Objectives and Operational Capabilities
The SIVAL project addresses these industrial and operational challenges by providing comprehensive support across several engineering domains:
Defining Common Benchmarks: Establishing testing standards to compare the accuracy and efficiency of electromagnetic simulations and measurements.
Radar Cross Section (RCS) Evaluation: Proposing and validating specific criteria for evaluating RCS on complex military platforms.
Data Exchange Standardization: Establishing a common standard and output format for the exchange of model data among stakeholders.
Optimization of Simulation Tools: Examining and tuning existing RCS simulation codes—based on findings from measurement campaigns—to improve settings, features, and overall precision.
Guidelines for System Engineers: Developing practical instructions to optimize the use of electromagnetic simulation tools throughout the design process of complex platforms.
Project Foundation and Impact
SIVAL focuses on building deep European expertise in advanced defense systems. The initiative encompasses a wide range of research and development activities, including the study of simulation tools, the preparation of test objects for measurement in RCS facilities, and the determination of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
By comparing simulations and measurements, the project aims to establish robust evaluation metrics for results. This integration of government and industry knowledge directly translates into shorter design cycles and increased reliability for future European military platforms. The project concludes with a comprehensive examination of the military and industrial applications of its outcomes, significantly advancing European expertise in complex defense systems.
