The ARTURO (Advanced Radar Technology in EUROPE) project

An initiative funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF 2021). Its primary objective is to define and develop next-generation sensor technologies that address the security needs and technological sovereignty of the European Union.

Project Goals and Vision

The main task of the ARTURO project is to provide innovative technical solutions that fulfill the future operational requirements of armed forces within a dynamically changing threat environment. The initiative focuses on consolidating state-of-the-art technologies and analyzing emerging trends in the field of radiolocation.

Within the framework of the consortium, activities include:

  • In-depth analysis of operational requirements and the evolution of modern threats across diverse military scenarios.

  • Integration of domain knowledge and the development of new concepts for advanced radar technologies.

  • Designing solutions based on digital architecture, advanced signal processing, and intelligent sensors.

Consortium and European Partnerships

The project is coordinated by the Italian company LEONARDO S.p.A.. The international consortium consists of leading European industrial entities and research and development units, including:

  • Airbus Defence and Space

  • Hensoldt Sensors

  • Indra Sistemas

  • Saab Aktiebolag

  • Thales

  • XY-Sensing

This collaboration between partners from Italy, France, Germany, Sweden, Spain, and Poland forms the foundation for building integrated, next-generation European defense systems.

Basic Project Information

ARTURO is a high-priority strategic project implemented under the European Defence Fund (EDF 2021). The venture is planned for a duration of 36 months and encompasses comprehensive feasibility studies and a design-concept phase.

This project will provide a solution to fulfill future operational needs based on the extended use of emerging technologies for advanced radar systems in Europe.
